Summer Poetry
Or the lyrics to my light-stretched days
Happy summer! Both of my children are school aged now, and I’ve recently come to realize how much I love summer again. (If you’re in the thick of baby or toddler summers, I see you. Your time is coming.)
I’m embracing the lack of schedule and saying yes to pool days, popsicles at any hour (really though, my daughter has consumed an unknown-to-me number of popsicles), pals. We’re still reading, practicing piano, and praying together each day. But that’s about it. Somehow my family still needs to eat at least three times a day. I’m devouring summer produce and loving fun, seasonal recipes (probably from Food and Wine or Caroline Chambers.
If you’re looking for me, you can find me out cannon-balling my son, painting watercolors with my daughter, adding novels to my library summer reading log, improving at Mahjong, applying SPF, marveling at seasonal produce, deadheading my geraniums / zinnias / daisies / dahlias, adding to my daily Peloton streak, and writing in the day’s slivers (even though the days are long and light-stretched).
Here are my summer poems to date. You can find them as well on my instagram.
Friends, how is your summer? Are you a summer lover? Waiting for the heat to pass? What’s been your favorite book so far? Your favorite recipe?

I love this, Alyssa! And I love summer, too. Oof, “I really want to lose four pounds”—that last line! I also have a hydrangea by my front door and I never thought about if my kids will remember it, or what details will scream quintessential summer to them when they’re grown. I don’t play mahjong, but loved the rhythm of your last stanza. Your words are dancing on the page.
Love love love!! And I also can’t count the number of popsicles.
